New York Cares was founded by a group of friends who wanted to take action against the serious social issues that faced our city in the late 1980s. Finding few options to help, they created their own organization to address the problems from the ground up.
New York Cares is now the city's leading volunteer organization, bringing vital volunteer support to thousands of nonprofit agencies, public schools, and other deserving organizations. Today's volunteers share our founders' vision that we all have a role to play in making our city a better place.
How We Work
Our staff works with partner organizations to identify their most pressing needs, creates projects to bridge the gaps, and recruits and deploys teams of volunteers to make a difference.
Our volunteer model is so successful that it sparked a national movement. More than 370 volunteer organizations, united under the umbrella of the Hands On Network/Points of Light Institute, have adopted this unique approach to service.
Our Programs
More than 48,000 people volunteer with us year after year because they know they make a real difference. Together, we help 400,000 disadvantaged New Yorkers through:
We plan and manage 1,000 hands-on, meaningful volunteer projects each month that provide a lifeline of support to vulnerable children, adults, and communities. Our projects are flexibly scheduled, allowing even the busiest New Yorkers to make a difference.
We engage 13,000 volunteers over two large days of service: New York Cares Day each October, which benefits public schools, and Hands On New York Day each April, which benefits community parks and gardens. These days are also important fundraisers for New York Cares.
We enable thousands of New York City's leading companies to play an important role in meeting pressing social needs. We are the organization that companies of all sizes turn to when they want to create employee volunteer programs.
We are New York City's lead organization for managing disaster volunteers. Our Disaster Preparedness and Recovery program ensures that volunteers can be quickly and effectively mobilized in the event of a disaster.
Our award-winning Youth Service Clubs offer meaningful volunteer opportunities to hundreds of low-income teens in our city's public schools. Our goal is to prepare the next generation of volunteers by educating students about social issues, engaging them in youth-led service projects, and providing leadership training.
