Volunteer on children's education programs this fall.
Statistically, Steve's family is among the poorest in New York City. Steve dreams of college and a better life -- but the odds are stacked against
him. You can help change those odds by volunteering as a New York Cares Kaplan SAT preparation tutor and helping disadvantaged students
like Steve make dreams of college and a brighter future a reality.
Make a Difference with Kaplan
This fall, New York Cares needs volunteers to work with more than 700 disadvantaged students in our Kaplan SAT Prep program, helping
them improve their chances of getting a college education. In the beginning, some students may lack confidence about their ability and aren't
even sure they'll graduate from high school, let alone go to college. Many don't know anyone who has taken the SAT, or people who went to
college.
But what a difference a school year makes. As the weeks pass and students improve their test scores, they build confidence and wonderful
possibilities emerge. Working one-on-one or in small groups with volunteer tutors every week, they enhance their test-taking skills, vocabulary,
geometry, and most importantly, their belief in themselves. Students in our program increased their test scores last year by an average of 25%,
with some students raising their scores by hundreds of points. Every point makes it more likely a student will be accepted into college, and
hopefully, the college of his or her choice.
How to Get Involved If you can spare two hours per week from
October through April to help underserved students prepare for the SAT, log in now and sign up for Session A -- the first in a series of two comprehensive
trainings designed by Kaplan, Inc., the leading provider of college test preparation, or call our project sign-up hotline at 212-402-1156.
Volunteers Needed
We need more than 300 volunteers for test
preparation programs this fall; we also have
a number of Team Leader and Co-Team
Leader slots to fill. All it takes is two hours
per week.
As a New York Cares Kaplan SAT tutor, you
give underserved young people a better
chance of earning a college education and
transforming their future. Your commitment
shows students that someone believes
they've got what it takes, and often, that's all
they need. You can make a lasting impact on
a young person's life -- and your own.
During these free sessions, you will learn
core tutoring skills, and how to teach SAT
studying and test-taking techniques. After
completing the training, you will choose a
project location and time that's convenient
for you.
